Operation Kindness Receives $12,100 of Funding for New Panleukopenia Kitten Enclosures

Sugarpuff came into our care from Dallas Animal Services at just over a month old, underweight and tested positive for Panleukopenia. With assistance from Operation Kindness’ dedicated medical team, Sugarpuff recovered and was transported to our PetSmart adoption center where he found his new loving family and is thriving.

At Operation Kindness, we are committed to assisting pets that require extensive medical treatment and aiding our shelter partners who lack resources to care for critically sick or injured animals. One of our most vulnerable populations our medical staff treats are cats with feline panleukopenia — a highly contagious viral disease that often leads to dehydration and requires intensive medical treatment. In 2024, we assisted 155 panleukopenia kittens and watched as they were adopted to start their new life journey.

Caring for Feline Panleukopenia

As our organization’s patient care manager, Enrique Salazar is committed to ensuring all animals who receive medical care in our Rees-Jones Foundation Medical Wing are comfortable, safe and loved throughout their stay. In January, Salazar noticed that the current enclosures that house the panleukopenia patients needed some upgrading to make the space more comfortable for the kittens as they underwent treatment.

With the kittens in mind, Salazar swiftly started designing the layout of new enclosures, composing a proposal for funding and worked alongside Operation Kindness’ development team to receive sponsorship for his plans. With larger enclosures, panleukopenia kittens will not only have an improved quality of life during treatment, but it would also advance their overall recovery time, reduce the chance of the disease from spreading and allow us to treat more kittens.

Thanks to a generous supporter, we received $12,100 in funding for six newly designed enclosures. We are excited for the upgrades to begin in June 2025 and can’t wait to help more kittens receive care in a larger, more comfortable space.
